We weren’t getting along splendidly. I was in for my physical, and my doctor was not thrilled. Apparently, requesting pharmaceuticals was frowned upon by the profession. While they’ll send you away with antibiotics galore, it was a little harder to get a Modafinil prescription. (Learn more about Modafinil here.)
Plus, trying to get a prescription for Modafinil wasn’t my first request of the day. I’d already asked my bald as a cueball primary care physician for some Finasteride to keep my hairline crisp. We went back and forth for a few minutes before he sent the script in.
Our appointment continued, and I could tell he wasn’t pleased. No, he was disgusted more than anything. He was a few months from retirement. I liked to play Internet doctor and wanted to test out all the new stuff. Seeing eye-to-eye was out of the picture. Telling me never to come back to his office was more likely.
How I Got a Modafinil Prescription
Always comfortable in uncomfortable situations, I pressed forward. What’s the worst he could say? One little “no” had never stopped me from asking before. But I had to use a little tact. I knew I had to wait until the end before requesting a Modafinil prescription.
So I waited. And tried to be charming and friendly. I needed him not to hate me. If he truly despised me, I knew I’d have no shot at the prescription for Modafinil. Recovering from the Finasteride mishap, our appointment was ending. Blood work, ball fondling, and all.
He looked at me. I could tell he didn’t hate me, but was certainly ready for me to get the heck out of his office. Then he made a mistake. He gave me the opening:
“Well, Jacob – is there anything else I can do for you?”
My face instantly lit up. He could see my wheels turning. He knew he’d made a mistake right when it left his mouth. I started my spiel as his shoulders slumped:
“Actually, I did have one last question. I’ve been working a lot of late nights. My business online requires me to have a sleepless night or three every month.”
I paused for a moment. The hatred hadn’t come back in his stare. I had a chance:
“See, my clients will pay me double if they need a big project done on 24-hour notice. That’s an opportunity I can’t turn down. So I often accept these projects and then stay up all night. When I was in Colombia, I got some Modafinil from a friend to help with shift sleep disorder, and it helped me deal with working all night. I had issues staying up all night without Modafinil. Once I started using it when I had “graveyard” shift work, I was able to stay up, and my sleep rhythm wasn’t bothered too much the next day.”
His look had completely changed. He was disgusted. Pissed. He hated me. I was sure of it. But he just sat there. Staring at me. So I kept going. Always. Be. Selling. So I kept trying to sell him on getting a Modafinil prescription:
“As I only get these types of projects 3-5 times a month, I’d only need a small prescription for Modafinil. I always try to take these 24-hour notice type of jobs, but due to the problems with shift sleep – I don’t think I’d be able to any longer without Modafinil.”
I was laying it on a little thick. I couldn’t tell what he was about to say. He didn’t say anything for a bit. We sat there in silence. Just looking at each other. We were in a standoff. Whoever speaks first loses. Well, maybe not. He had all the power in this situation.
He finally stared down at his tablet and started typing away. I didn’t know if this was good or bad. I just sat there trying to look as meek as possible. He broke the silence:
“Alright, I’m not certain you suffer from shift sleep disorder just because you work all night a few times a month, Jacob. But I don’t think taking Modafinil will do you any harm – as long as you don’t abuse it. So I’m going to write you a small Modafinil prescription.”
He had given in. I was baffled. I tried to hold back my excitement. I couldn’t believe my grumpy old doctor was giving me a prescription for a smart drug. He didn’t even look up at me as I thanked him and skipped out. He just wanted me to leave. And never come back.

How to Get a Modafinil Prescription
If you want to get a Modafinil prescription, then you’ll have to come correct. I wouldn’t say my method was ideal, but however you pitch your primary care physician, you need to hit on an FDA-approved reason for Modafinil. Prescribing Pharmaceuticals for fun isn’t exactly legal for your doctor.
So here are FDA-approved reasons your doctor can prescribe Modafinil:
Narcolepsy:This is a serious condition that requires immediate medical attention. People suffering from Narcolepsy are prone to falling asleep at any given time. This can be life-threatening. As such, a drug like Modafinil that promotes wakefulness can be exceptionally useful in treating this condition. However, unless you fall asleep at random times, it’s unlikely you’ll be able to convince your primary care physician that you’re suffering from Narcolepsy.
Shift Work Disorder:This is what I went with, and it worked. If you work online at all (be it part time or full time), you can claim you work all night on occasion and that the following days you suffer from excessive daytime sleepiness resulting from shift work disorder. If I were a gambling man, this is where I’d put my money when looking to get a Modafinil prescription.
Excessive Daytime Sleepiness: You’re better off claiming shift work disorder over this. If you tell a doctor you suffer from excessive daytime sleepiness, they’ll probably run tests and want to look into the issue deeper. Only once they’ve dug in will you have a chance at getting Modafinil. Still, as Modafinil does promote wakefulness, doctors can legally prescribe the smart drug for individuals suffering from excessive daytime sleepiness.
