What is Modafinil? Uses, History, & More
Modafinil, also known as Provigil, was developed in 1994 in France. Originally, the pharmaceutical drug was developed to treat narcolepsy. The drug quickly gained stream, as doctors realized Provigil was fantastic treating sleep apnea and shift sleep disorder, too.
Shortly thereafter, many an entrepreneur found the pharmaceutical to be beneficial for cognition, focus, and productivity. Nowadays, Modafinil is widely considered a smart drug used by digital nomads, CEOs, and students around the world.
The company that developed Modafinil created Armodafinil, or Nuvigil, in 2007. Modafinil’s patent had run out, so the pharmaceutical company created a new drug with similar effects, but a different chemical structure.
Armodafinil is enantiomer of Modafinil. This means that Modafinil contains the “R” and “S” enantiomers, while Nuvigil only contains the “R” enantiomer. Due to the minor chemical changes, the company could get another patent for the new drug. As well, Armodafinil offers higher plasma concentrations throughout the day.
Nuvigil vs. Provigil: The Similarities Start Here
Modafinil vs. Armodafinil. Provigil vs. Nuvigil. Same thing, but with different names. Luckily, it doesn’t matter what the name is – these smart drugs are fairly similar in a plethora of manners.
Here are a few commonalities:
~ Focus, Cognition, & Productivity
Personally, I found the main benefit of both Nuvigil and Provigil the same – improved brain power. On either smart drug, you’ll be able to crush your work, stay focus, and get a ton of stuff done.
The effects in this regard are similar, as the compounds themselves are quite similar. Personally, I found Modafinil to be a little stronger overall. However, others have said they feel more focus after taking Armodafinil.
If you want to make more money or get better grades and need to improve your focus and cognition, both of these nootropics will help you.
~ Solid Half-Life
Both of these smart drugs feature a similar half-life. While some argue Armodafinil will last one or two hours longer, but most users don’t experience much of a difference. Depending on your dosage of Modafinil or Armodafinil, you’ll experience the effects of the pharmaceutical drug for 8-15 hours. For most dosages, the half-life is around 10-12 hours.
Armodafinil vs. Modafinil: The BIGGEST Differences
While the similarities between these nootropics are striking, there are some distinct differences.
It’s important to note that every user reacts to smart drugs differently. Some may disagree with my statements regarding the differences of Armodafinil and Modafinil. However, these are simply what I noted after testing the smart drugs. Other users may experience different results.
Differences between Modafinil and Armodafinil:
~ Sleep Effects
I found it MUCH easier to fall asleep after taking Armodafinil compared to Modafinil. With similar timing and dosing, I fell asleep about 2-3 hours earlier when taking Armodafinil – which was a huge surprise. Nuvigil simply didn’t disrupt my sleep as much as Provigil did.
On the flip side, if you’re trying to stay up all night or work late hours, then Modafinil may be a better choice – as it’s nearly impossible to fall asleep after taking the smart drug.
~ Feel-Good Feelings
Modafinil often produces a feel-good state It’s basically like a small high that makes working on tedious tasks somewhat enjoyable. Personally, I like this aspect of my favorite nootropic.
With Armodafinil, I never had similar feelings. There was no “high” feeling for me. Just a smooth, focused energy.
After taking Armodafinil, I didn’t have any stomach issues and sleeping was much easier. As Nuvigil is a bit “weaker” for me, it wasn’t a surprise that the side effects seemed to disappear, too.
~ Tolerance & Dosing
If you take 200 mg of Modafinil, you’ll only need about 150 mg of Armodafinil to feel similar smart drug effects. Armodafinil is “purer” than Modafinil due to the single enantiomer structure. With Nuvigil, less seems to be more.
From a tolerance perspective, Modafinil seems to be slightly more addictive. Neither smart drug is habit forming whatsoever, but it’s easier to start depending on Modafinil than Armodafinil.
Using Nuvigil on a daily basis may be a better idea, as there are fewer side effects. Modafinil must be cycled properly, or issues could arise.
Which is Better For You? Nuvigil or Provigil?
Again, I must reiterate that this is simply my opinion after using both nootropics. Personally, I see the Armodafinil vs. Modafinil debate like this:
Try both smart drugs and see which one you like better – if you have the funds.
If you want to really crush work 1-2 times a week, then Modafinil may be the better choice. I found the cognitive effects slightly stronger and with proper cycling, I prefer it.
For regular smart drug use, think 3-6 days a week, Armodafinil is the better choice. There are fewer side effects with this nootropic and it’s easier to get to sleep.
Armodafinil vs. Modafinil: The Final Verdict
Overall, it’s best to try both smart drugs and then see what you like best. I found Modafinil to be strong, but with more side effects, albeit minor ones. Armodafinil is a little less heavy, but better for regular, long-term usage.
