It was four in the morning and I will still messing around on the computer. Productive work hours had ended long ago and I’d been browsing apartment rentals around the world. Great use of my time on a nootropic.
Now, I didn’t mean to be up this late, but I just couldn’t get to sleep. The Modafinil half-life was still kicking in and I wasn’t close to getting some shut eye.
I’d taken 200 mg of Modafinil around noon, and then another 100 mg around 7 p.m. I figured I’d be asleep between 2-3 a.m. – which isn’t too bad. But I was wrong. The half-life of Modafinil ensured I was wide awake, but the timing ensured I wasn’t productive.
It was a nightmare. Eventually, I passed out around 5:30 in the morning, but not before vowing to never screw up my dosing and timing like that again. I quickly learned Modafinil and sleep aren’t a match made in heaven.

What is Modafinil?
Now, before we dive into Modafinil and how the smart drug affects sleep, we need to discuss what the nootropic is and why you’ll struggle to get some shut-eye after taking it.
Modafinil is a pharmaceutical drug created to combat shift sleep disorder, narcolepsy, and sleep apnea (Source). Before Internet suppliers from India took over, you had to get this drug through a prescription from your doctor.
The brand name of Modafinil is Provigil, and the drug is said to promote wakefulness in users. Originally, the pharmaceutical was designed to combat excessive sleepiness by altering certain neurotransmitters in the brain.
Now, it should come as no surprise that a drug designed to promote wakefulness would make it hard to sleep. If you’re planning to use the smart drug, you should know that sleeping will be difficult.
Modafinil’s half-life is 12-15 hours. This means that the effects of the pharmaceutical will be felt for 12-15 hours after consumption. If you take Modafinil at noon, the nootropic will still be working until midnight – at a minimum.
While the science isn’t completely clear, like it is with stimulants like Adderal, Modafinil essentially alters the neurotransmitters in your brain that tell you when to be tired.
Instead of feeling sleepy, the neurotransmitters don’t alert your body to mental fatigue while on Modafinil. This allows you to stay focused, offers improved cognition, and ensures you stay productive.
Thus, you WON’T get any sleep after ingesting 100-300 mg of Modafinil until 12-15 hours later. As such, most users find taking Modafinil earlier in the day is beneficial.
How to Sleep on Modafinil
Modafinil and sleep. It’s possible. You can take nootropics and get a great sleep at night. How to sleep on Modafinil? Here’s what I do:
This is the most important step. Point. Blank. Period. The earlier you take Modafinil, the better chance you have to get to sleep at a decent time.
If you take Modafinil before 10 a.m. – you have a good chance of getting to sleep before midnight. A much better chance. Personally, I like to try and take Modafinil around 8:30 a.m. This ensures the half-life runs out before midnight and I can get some decent shuteye.
No Coffee After 4 P.M.
If you’re like most Modafinil users, you’re combining the smart drug with coffee – and lots of it. That’s certainly what I do. Just make sure to cut out the coffee after 4 p.m. – unless you want to be up all night.
Coffee and caffeine can stay in your system for 6-8 hours, too. This combined with the Modafinil half-life will make sleeping harder, too.
Don’t take too much Modafinil! Try to stay within the 100-300 mg range. If you’re pulling a double dose, split things into 200 mg in the morning and 100 mg in the early afternoon.
I never advise you to take more than 300 mg of Modafinil. I’ve tried it. It’s not a great plan, especially when sleep is the concern. For most users, 200 mg in the early morning is the absolute best dosing protocol.
Better Sleep at Night
Now, once the half-life is almost up and you want to get some sleep, there are a few things you can do. On days when you take Modafinil, any distraction can become paramount.
You’ll find yourself laying in bed searching around Instagram or on Airbnb looking at apartments in places you’ve never heard of. It makes sleeping tough because your brain is engaged.
You need to dull things out. You need your brain to disengage. First, put the phone away. Do NOT bring your phone in the bedroom after taking Modafinil earlier in the day. Sleep will be next to impossible.
Try to find a book or a boring, old sitcom to watch on T.V. You want something that’s not too engaging.
