7 Quick Tips to Keep Modafinil Tolerance Under Control
I felt like garbage. I’d taken Modafinil for five straight days. My Modafinil tolerance was all screwed up, and I’d spent the whole day browsing Airbnb rentals in nearly every city around the world.
I’d wasted a full day of smart drug usage, which is never ideal. Mentally, I was drained and baffled that I didn’t take advantage of the nootropic benefits.
So I started searching.
I was curious if one could use Modafinil too much. I wanted to know if Modafinil tolerance was a real thing.
Maybe I had been using the smart drug too much…
It turns out, that’s exactly what happened. You can become tolerant to the effects of Modafinil after a using the drug too much. Many other users have experienced similar findings.
Modafinil tolerance is all too common.
Many smart drug users have realized that it’s important to find the perfect dosage and cycle these nootropics.
If not, the effects will wear off quickly.
In this detailed guide on avoiding just that and combating Modafinil tolerance, I’ll cover things like:

What is Modafinil?
These days most people use Modafinil as a smart drug or nootropic. They take this stuff to enhance the mind.
But Modafinil wasn’t created with cognition in mind.
The stuff was created as a pharmaceutical drug in France during the early 1990s. Researchers wanted to develop a drug that could treat common ailments like (Source):
- Sleep apnea
- Shift sleep disorder
Modafinil combated all three by making it almost impossible to sleep or feel fatigue. As such, the drug was an instant hit.
The stuff was so good that individuals soon found out Modafinil was ideal for off-the-label uses too.
We’re talking things like:
- Enhanced cognition
- Improved memory retention
- Increased output and productivity
- Ability to work all night
The pill allowed people to “supercharge” their mind in a way damn near nothing else could.
With fatigue completely eliminated, individuals found they were almost twice as productive on days they took Modafinil.
That’s why Modafinil is currently the world’s most popular smart drug.
And it’s exactly why many people must think about Modafinil tolerance and how to fight it…
The stuff works so well we want to take it all the time!
Modafinil Tolerance and Science
I don’t want all the evidence to be anecdotal.
So here are three different studies talking about Modafinil, effects, dosages, and tolerance.
While these studies won’t give useful advice on consuming Modafinil and the language is generally directed at the scientific community, I found them useful when striving to understand how Modafinil works on a deeper level:
- In the first study I found, done by Elsevier Science, the study found that Modafinil is well tolerated, with no evidence of tolerance developing during 40 weeks of treatment (Source).
This would suggest that Modafinil tolerance is a myth. However, researchers were not looking at Modafinil as a smart drug in this study.
This study was done on patients with narcolepsy, who were simply trying to stay awake all day and not feel fatigue.
This study does not take enhanced cognition into account.
- While rare, a study done by Raman Krishnan and Krishnan Vengadaragava found that Modafinil dependence and tolerance is possible. A rare case of withdrawal symptoms after taking Modafinil for an extended period of time was noted (Source).
Another study found similar findings (Source):
Modafinil is known to have less or no adverse effects than those found in traditional psychostimulants such as amphetamine, methylphenidate or cocaine. It can be applied as an anti-psychotic or anti-fatigue agent. However, the waking mechanism of modafinil is yet to be fully revealed. Recent studies reported that modafinil may be subject to abuse and addiction.
What does this all mean?
Modafinil tolerance could be a potential real issue for individuals relying on the smart drug day in and day out.
It doesn’t matter whether it be for on-the-label uses or off.
What is Tolerance?
Well, tolerance is the realization or observation that the effects of a drug diminish over time due to habitual usage.
Tolerance to any drug can become a huge problem. While we’re talking about tolerance and smart drugs, major tolerance issues stem from developing a tolerance to antibiotics or pain relievers.
Imagine having chronic pain, but becoming tolerant to pain relievers and anti-inflammatories.
You’d have a serious issue on your hands.
Similar problems arise when we rely on antibiotics to cure a common cold. The bacteria may become tolerant of certain antibiotic strains.
Then when you do have an issue that requires antibiotic treatments, the drugs can’t fight off the bacteria.
These situations may sound like dire issues, and they can become problems.
However, there is good news. Tolerance is reversible.
This is especially true when taking a smart drug like Modafinil for off-the-label uses.
Because most of us simply use the nootropic. We don’t abuse it.
Types of Tolerance
Let’s talk a little bit more about tolerance. There are three different types of tolerance (Source):
- Pharmacokinetic tolerance
- Pharmacodynamic tolerance
- Behavioral tolerance
When talking about Modafinil tolerance, most users will only have to worry about behavioral problems.
This type of tolerance involves the effects of the smart drug, which is what Modafinil users experience when using the nootropic too often.
Basically, this means the effects of the drug are not as strong as they “used” to be or an individual wants them to be.
You’re not getting the same Modafinil high when taking the nootropics.
The effects wear off to quickly. You don’t get as much work done when taking Modafinil as you used to.
That’s behavioral tolerance in layman’s terms.
7 Tips to Keep Your Modafinil Tolerance Tamed
– Don’t Develop Any Tolerance –
First and foremost – try to avoid developing a tolerance.
The best medicine is a proactive approach. Don’t develop a tolerance to Modafinil to begin with.
Don’t take Modafinil every day. Only take 100-200 mg per day. Never use the drug on back-to-back days.
Follow those three tips, and it’s highly unlikely you’ll ever have to deal with Modafinil tolerance at all.
– Limit Usage –
The biggest key to avoiding issues with your Modafinil dosage and tolerance is limiting usage.
If you take Modafinil too much, you’ll eventually develop a tolerance to the smart drug. That’s just how pharmaceuticals and tolerance works.
To avoid developing dosage issues, here’s how I recommend you take Modafinil:
- Take Modafinil 1-4 times a week. I prefer to only use the smart drug 1-2 days each week.
- Take 100-200 mg per day. Never take more than 200 mg in a single dose.
Following the two rules above will ensure you don’t have too many tolerance issues with Modafinil.
– Never On Back-to-Back Days –
To further protect yourself against Modafinil tolerance, you’ll want to avoid taking the drug on consecutive days.
By not taking Modafinil on back-to-back days, you’ll ensure the drug’s effects remain strong.
The people who develop major issues with tolerance and smart drugs end up abusing them. This means taking the same nootropic every single day. Then once the effects dwindle, they up the dosages.
Don’t do this. Never take Modafinil on back-to-back days.
– Take Breaks –
If you’ve been using Modafinil 1-4 days a week for a few straight months, you’ll need to take a break from the smart drug.
Personally, I use the nootropic 1-2 times a week for around two straight months. Then I completely stop taking Modafinil for two full weeks.
By not consuming the nootropic for two straight weeks, my body resets its tolerance levels. Coming off a break from Modafinil, I can feel the smart drug stronger than ever when I start using it again.
Usually, a one week to one month break is all you’ll need to reset your tolerance levels.
– Cycle Smart Drugs –
Another way to avoid becoming reliant on Modafinil is by cycling smart drugs.
If you’re a digital nomad or hustler, you may be using nootropics all week. I know I have.
However, it’s important to avoid becoming reliant on any one smart drug.
While I prefer Modafinil over anything else I’ve tried, there are some great alternatives out there.
If you want to use nootropics 5-7 days a week, you’ll want to have 2-3 different products to cycle through.
– Limit Other Drugs & Stimulants –
On days when you take a smart drug, limit your exposure to other drugs and stimulants. Never mix smart drugs.
If you take Modafinil one day, do NOT pop some ALPHA Brain, too.
Don’t mix nootropics on the same day. That’s just a recipe for disaster.
Also, try to avoid other stimulants when taking Modafinil. The only thing I recommend mixing with this smart drug is fresh, organic coffee. Everything else is just too much. Trust me!
I prefer downing 2-3 cups of Coffee while taking Modafinil. Nothing more, nothing less.
– Supplement with Magnesium –
Last, but not least – you can supplement with magnesium if you start to develop a tolerance to any smart drug.
While I’ve talked about the vast benefits of magnesium before, I recently realized the mineral could be used to reset tolerance levels of any pharmaceutical drug. That’s another huge benefit.
If you’ve already developed issues with dosing and tolerance, then supplementing with magnesium and stopping usage may be your best bet to get things back in order.
Personally, I found magnesium oil is the best way to consume the mineral.
The Definitive Guide to Taming Your Modafinil Tolerance
Personally, I follow all of the tips and tricks above these days. And I haven’t had any issues with Modafinil, dosing, and tolerance lately.
By following the advice and tips above, Modafinil tolerance shouldn’t be an issue.
Just follow my dosing schedule and you’ll never have a problem. If you’ve already become tolerant, take a break from the smart drug or try some magnesium.
