As you might have guessed, I’m not from Thailand! However, I have visited the country over ten times during the past decade – which is why I’m writing this guest post.

I’ve experienced everything from full moon parties on Ko Pha-Ngan to blissful treks through the mountains surrounding Chiang Mai and plenty more in between.

What’s more, I have a wealth of knowledge regarding smart drugs and have been using nootropics such as Modafinil for over five years.

I can explain the legalities of Modafinil in Thailand and can show you exactly how to buy legit products during your time in the country.

My goal is to help you learn everything you need to know about Modafinil and exactly how to get your hands on it without an issue.

In this guide, I’ll explain things like;

If you’re curious about Modafinil in Thailand, this guide is fairly long and detailed so feel free to click any of the above links and skip ahead directly to the info you want.

As always, I must hit y’all with a quick disclaimer before we begin…

I am not a doctor or a lawyer. This is not legal or medical advice. This guide/article is strictly for entertainment. Always consult a medical professional before consuming any nootropic such as Modafinil. Always abide by the laws of your country. Oh, and please read my disclaimer page, too.

What is Modafinil?

Before I outline the legalities of Modafinil in Thailand and where to buy it, let’s briefly look at what the smart drug is and why it’s so popular.

Modafinil is a nootropic that enhances people’s cognitive abilities. It was originally developed in France during the late 1980s as a ‘eugeroic’, or wakefulness-promoting agent.

It was initially marketed under the brand name ‘Provigil’ and doctors soon began prescribing it for a range of disorders such as narcolepsy, sleep apnea, and shift sleep disorder (Source).

Provigil was introduced to the U.S. in the late 1990’s where it soon developed a reputation for off-the-label uses. It is now commonly referred to as a ‘smart drug’ and Modafinil has gained a reputation as the best and most effective smart drug available.

Modafinil offers a range of benefits including:

  • Combatting fatigue
  • Preventing sleepiness (great for all-nighters)
  • Improved memory retention
  • Enhanced cognitive functions
  • Improved productivity
  • …And more!

Overall, Modafinil gives you the sense that you can accomplish anything while you’re on it.

Modafinil may not the pill from the movie “Limitless”, but it comes pretty close.

According to reports, Modafinil became extremely popular among Silicon Valley executives and CEOs in the early 2000’s as a way of gaining a competitive advantage over the competition.

Just 200mg of Modafinil could help users pull all-nighters with ease and some hopped-up executives were reportedly working 20-hour days while on the drug. In major cities throughout the U.S., Modafinil quickly surpassed Adderall as the study drug of choice among students.

If you’re curious about how to buy Modafinil in Thailand, there’s a very good reason:

Modafinil just works, mate.

Is Modafinil Legal in Thailand?

I’m not a lawyer or legal scholar, so the following should NOT be taken as legal advice.

This section about the legalities of Modafinil in Thailand should not be misconstrued as anything more than hyperbole. I urge you to follow the laws of Thailand during your stay and do your own due diligence.

Modafinil is legal in Thailand.

Yep! Modafinil is legal in Thailand, but don’t just take my word for it…I’ll prove it to you.

Just to give you a little understanding of the organization and structure of the Thai government, the Thai Ministry of Public Health contains a sub-division called the Thai Food and Drug Administration (Source).

The Thai FDA’s Narcotics Control Division has a helpful website where anyone can check the legality of any drug. Pretty cool, right? Click here to see the page for yourself.

According to results from this page, Modafinil is classified as a ‘general drug’ and is not classified as a narcotic drug or psychotropic substance according to the Narcotics Act 2522.

Therefore, anyone can carry a supply of up to 30 days’ worth of Modafinil into Thailand for personal use. No permit from the Thai FDA is required.

You can pass through the Green Channel at the airport customers without declaring Modafinil, as it is considered part of your personal belongings.

If you’d like to learn a little more about Thai law, according to the reputable law firm Siam Legal, the 1979 Narcotics Act 2522 and the 1975 Psychotropic Substances Act 2518 are the two most important Acts to know about (Source).

Nootropics are not mentioned in either Act, and are therefore perfectly legal for personal use.

Can You Buy Modafinil in Thailand From a Pharmacy?

It is very difficult to find a pharmacy in Thailand that will sell Modafinil. There is no registered brand name for Modafinil in Thailand, so you cannot buy legally buy a legitimate version produced by a registered laboratory.

In general, you cannot purchase Modafinil from a pharmacy or be prescribed it by a Thai doctor or physician.

There are many nationwide pharmacy chains such as ‘SaveDrug’, ‘SuperSave’ and the British brand ‘Boots’. These chains will not sell Modafinil and the pharmacists won’t even have heard of it.

All Thai pharmacies use the Thailand edition of the MIMS Drug Reference guide. This guide lists all medicines that are currently prescribed in Thailand. A quick check of the MIMS guide reveals that Modafinil isn’t listed.

– Which pharmacies sell Modafinil in Thailand? –

There are many independent pharmacies that may offer products containing Modafinil or generic products containing the same active ingredients.

These pharmacies are usually located in areas popular with tourists, or so-called ‘party-areas’. Examples of such areas include:

  • Nana in Bangkok. There are many pharmacies located along Sukhumvit road near the ‘Nana’ BTS (Elevated train) station.
  • Patpong in Bangkok. This is a world-famous red-light district.
  • Pattaya, a popular tourist town on Thailand’s Gulf Coast, famous for its adult establishments.

Pharmacies in these areas are notorious for selling a variety of controlled medicines over the counter, without a prescription. This is illegal, but then again, so is prostitution and you’d never guess that if you visited these areas!

If you see a pharmacy displaying anabolic steroids and other performance-enhancing drugs in its window, you’ll may find nootropics such as Modafinil on sale there as well.

However, I cannot suggest specific pharmacies as their offerings may change by the time you read this.

Products, prices and availability continually change. For example, the pharmacy pictured below is located on Sukhumvit road just around the corner from the famous Nana Entertainment Plaza.

On my previous trips, this pharmacy carried Modafinil, but when I visited this year, the owner informed me that he no longer stocked it.

Therefore, I cannot guarantee that you’ll be able to find Modafinil in any particular pharmacy. It’s a difficult drug to find in Thailand and independent shops may change their stock and prices by the time you read this.

– Is Modafinil in Thai pharmacies Legit? –

It’s difficult to find a Thai pharmacy that sells Modafinil. You’ll likely find products that have been produced by an unlicensed laboratory, or so-called ‘underground’ lab. These labs aren’t legal, but some have developed good reputations for manufacturing quality products.

A good example would be Alpha Pharma, a lab best known for its anabolic steroid offerings. If you do find a Thai pharmacy that stocks Modafinil, it is likely to be from Alpha Pharma or another unlicensed lab.

You should be aware that there is a possibility, however unlikely, of buying fake or counterfeit drugs, even from a pharmacy. In Thailand, you cannot trust that the brands you see in pharmacies are even from the actual underground labs!

You may be buying a counterfeit version of an underground product.

As such, I’ve found it far easier and safer to buy Modafinil online while living in or traveling to Thailand.

How to Get Modafinil Online in Thailand | Your 2019 Guide

The good news is getting Modafinil in Thailand won’t be too difficult for you.

Many online Modafinil pharmacies ship to Thailand with ease. Customs is simple to pass and you’re sure to have your Modafinil in no time while living in the land of smiles.

Plus, I’ve bought from over a handful of great Modafinil vendors over the years. I know which companies have legit product, fast shipping times, and great customer service.

So without further ado, here’s how to buy Modafinil in Thailand from the best online pharmacies:

  • Afinil Express

I’ll try to avoid hyping this company up. Although, that’s probably not going to happen. If you’re buying Modafinil in Thailand, then I’d start with Afinil Express.

These guys are the premier online Modafinil vendor around. They’ve been serving customers for years and offer great prices, some of the best customer service in the industry, and fast shipping to Thailand.

Afinil Express offers 10-15 day shipping times to Thailand.

That’s quick. You’ll get some Modafinil in just a few short weeks when ordering from this vendor.

Plus, Afinil Express offers guaranteed delivery to Thailand! You’ll either get the Modafinil order or you’ll get to choose between a full refund or a reshipment.

The smart drugs, Modafinil and Armodafinil, will be legit. Anything you get from Afinil Express will be high-quality and offer massive cognitive benefits. I’ve personally tested their products on multiple orders.

Last but not least, Afinil Express offers great Bitcoin discounts and return customer coupons. You can save over 30% off your order when combining coupons.

  • Buy Moda

While this vendor is a bit newer, I’ve rapidly become a huge fan of Buy Moda.

They offer some of the best customer service, huge Bitcoin discounts, and of course, guaranteed delivery. You will get the generic Modafinil or you get a full refund or reshipment. It’s your choice.

  • Modafinil Star

If the above vendors don’t suit your fancy, another decent Modafinil online pharmacy while living in Thailand is Modafinil Star.

These guys have been around forever, have a great reputation, and make buying Modafinil online simple while living in the land of smiles.

Once you order from Modafinil Star, you’ll get rapid shipping, always guaranteed delivery, and high-quality generic Modafinil products.

Usually, the orders arrive within 12-15 days after ordering from Modafinil Star.

If you’re buying Modafinil in Thailand with BTC, I recommend looking at this online Modafinil vendor.

  • ModaPharma

A longstanding staple in the online Modafinil industry,  ModaPharma does a solid job of sending smart drugs globally, including all around Asia and Thailand.

They pride themselves on quick shipping in Asia, with orders arriving within 7-15 days.

You’ll also find ModaPharma offers solid customer service, 100% guaranteed deliveries, and average Bitcoin discounts.

Overall, I’ve had decent success with this vendor and feel confident customers in Thailand will, too.

One more thing. I love that ModaPharma has purity testing policies. The online Modafinil pharmacy individually tests each batch of Modafinil they purchase before any shipping products.

This means every order is guaranteed to be 100% legit Modafinil!

Brand Name Modafinil in TH

I’ve yet to come across legit brand name Modafinil products at pharmacies in Thailand. You will NOT find products like Provigil or even Alertec in pharmacies here.

It’s just not going to happen.

So, many people living in Thailand turn to buy Modafinil online. Luckily, you have a lot of great options when looking to buy smart drugs online in Thailand.

Some of the most popular generic Modafinil brands available online include:

Personally, I’ve found that Modalert gives me the best bang for my buck. The product offers me great cognitive benefits and allows me 12+ hours of focused work.

However, Modvigil is the cheapest product and an ideal budget option.

If you’re unsure what product to get, I recommend starting with a sample pack – which features all four products.

Adrafinil in Thailand, Prescription-Free Modafinil Alternative

While I’m confident that you won’t have any issues getting your hands on Modafinil while in Thailand, I recognize that many people want other options.

I get that, which is why I recommend Adrafinil as well. Adrafinil is a 100% legal prescription-free alternative to Modafinil.

Why?

Because your body converts Adrafinil to the active ingredient in Modafinil, Diphenylmethylsulfinylacetamide, after ingestion.

This means that Adrafinil takes a little longer to kick in than Modafinil, and it isn’t as strong. Modafinil is the king of smart drugs because it’s the best thing out there.

I’d only recommend Adrafinil as a decent alternative.

–> For those interested, you can buy Adrafinil from my favorite vendor here.

Jake D. Good post. I’ve lived in LoS a few years now and I also use your fav source (choo choo!) to order mine.

Last 2 orders, placed in the space of time since this post (9/11/18), have been getting caught up in customs. And while I’d like to think it’s as simple as going to pick up, likely paying a 30% (+7% VAT) fee and all will be OK, I’m a bit unnerved by the prospect of it.

Thoughts? Experience? Others sharing same/similar experiences?

    Interesting.

I will look into this with the author of the post and get back to you.

Generally, there’s little issue passing customs in Thailand. So I’m a bit surprised.

Are you unnerved by the prospect of presenting identity to customs agents and the legalities of such?

      No issues with I.D. – I’m 100% legal on valid non-R visa.
I’m not a fan of the likely fleecing I’ll incur at a minimum AND “TIT”…., This IS Thailand so they can do just about anything they want.

Have had no prior issues ordering last 3-4 years. Over zealous uptick in activity at customs, & for what purpose (relative to foreigners), is my concern.

        Hmmm…

        Honestly, I’m not sure.

        Not a great situation.

If you’re not too concerned about the legalities of things, then I would just suck it up and pay what’s required to get your hands on the Moda.

When in Rome and all that jazz.

I’ve lived in Thailand 18 years and have never had a shipment of anything, including medication, seized.

A friend also received his Modafinil order within 4 days of ordering. Shipped from Singapore and arrived in Chiang Mai (via Bangkok) without issue.

I think whoever ships your medications is doing something wrong, Alph.

Mike, since I didn’t hear back, thought I’d ping again. I’ve ordered from Jake D.s top pick…, AfinilExpress for a couple years. Before that, Modafinil Cat who, on closing, referred me to the prior.

If you’ve ordered in last 90-120 days without issue, I’d like to check out your provider.

I have made several prior purchases thru Afinil Express with no problem but the last two have been held by Thai customs. It is unclear whether Armodafinil is illegal in Thailand but customs is holding and will only release with authorization from the Thai FDA (highly unlikely).
Sadly, ordering Modafinil or Armodafinil and shipping to Thailand does not seem to be a viable alternative anymore.

    That’s surprising.

It certainly seems like things have changed.

I have a feeling vendors will soon stop offer guaranteed delivery to Thailand if this trend continues.

    Thanks for your comment.

John, as you can see from this string, I had a similar recent issue. In reality, the FDA does not restrict it for travelers yet the customs agents seem to want to collect a customs fee and VAT now.

I can’t attach the form from FDA but the essence of the check was:

The drug is not classified as a narcotic drug or psychotropic substance according to Narcotics Act B.E.
2522. Therefore, a patient under treatment can carry this medication into Thailand for personal use in
a quantity NOT EXCEEDIND 30 DAYS OF PRESCRIBED USAGE.

The application for a permit from Thai FDA does not required

If you have nothing else to declare you are allowed to pass through the Green Channel at airport customs without declaring the medication because it is then considered as personal belongings.

I was able to pick up my shipment but at a premium of 40%. The customs agent was accommodating and (luckily) spoke good English but initially was unwilling to release to me.

Mike, cheers for the detailed info here.

Sucks to hear you had to pay a premium – but at least you got the Modafinil.

Seems another case of hustling gringos, or farang in your case.

Becoming all too common these days around the developing world.

      Hi Mike,

I can imagine that travelers would not have an issue with customs but I reside in Thailand and mail-ordered the Modafinil. When the package arrived in customs they sent me a notification saying that I needed FDA approval before they could release the package.
I let the package be returned and tried to reorder a month later, hoping that the seizure was a random event but the second package was also held for the same reason.
Although Modafinil may not be classified as a narcotic, it is not on the list of legal substances. This is a country that ranks Marijuana on the same level as heroin so fine distinctions don’t seem to matter much.
Also it appears customs has become more active and concerned with packages from pharmas in India. Simply ordering from Afinil or other sources will probably not be successful from inside Thailand and may create problems for long stay visa holders.

Any update on this ?
How is the other provider going ?

Also, is it dangerous to try to buy 20 pills and get the package seized by customs WITHOUT going there to try to reclaim it ? or only by showing up we can get in the big troubles ?
