Many of my friends use the drug, too. None have reported significant side effects from this smart drug.

What is Modafinil?
Originally, Modafinil was developed in France as a pharmaceutical drug. The drug was designed as the premier wakefulness agent on the market.
Soon, Modafinil was being prescribed in Europe for common ailments like (Source):
- Sleep Apnea
- Shift Sleep Disorder
After finding commercial success in Europe, the drug quickly made it’s way to the United States.
In the USA, Modafinil quickly became popular for more than treating narcolepsy. The drug started being used for its off-the-label uses.
Aka people found out that Modafinil worked really well as a smart drug.
When you take Modafinil, you’ll generally find mental benefits like:
- 10-12+ hours of focus
- Improved overall cognition
- Enhance memory retention
- Increased productivity
- Ability to pull all-nighters
When taking the smart drug, most find their mind is in overdrive and they can get twice as much stuff done – compared to a “regular” day.
For many Modafinil users, there’s absolutely no denying the smart drug works.
There’s a reason Modafinil has become the world’s most popular smart drug!
You still have to look out for a few Modafinil side effects.
9 Modafinil Side Effects You Need to Know
It’s time to see what risks you run when popping the world’s most popular smart drug – aka my beloved Modafinil.
But here’s the thing…
Modafinil may be the world’s most popular smart drug, but it’s certainly not the most dangerous.
Certainly won’t find the most side effects when taking Modafinil.
This I can promise you…
But I’m no doctor, y’all.
So without further ado, here are some side effects of Modafinil you need to pay attention to:
Modafinil is a smart drug used to increase focus and heighten concentration. Many use the nootropic to work for 12-15 hours straight.
If you take Modafinil one day, DON’T expect to sleep for at least 10-15+ hours. You won’t be able to.
That’s almost a guarantee!
Sleeplessness is a definitive side effect of Modafinil. The drug works for 10-15+ hours, so you won’t be able to get some shut-eye during that time.
As such, we recommend taking this smart drug before 11 AM. This will allow you to fall asleep at a semi-reasonable hour after working all day on Modafinil.
Some people struggle with this side effect more than others.
For most, Modafinil doesn’t upset the stomach too much. The issue is the next morning.
I usually have diarrhea the morning after a day taking Modafinil. The drug just doesn’t sit well in my stomach.
Which isn’t surprising…
Diarrhea is one of the most common side effects of this smart drug. It’s really not a big deal, but something to be on the lookout for before using the nootropic.
~ Headache/Sinus Pressure
Many users find headaches or sinus pressure common after a day of Modafinil usage.
While a common side effect of Modafinil, this minor issue can be easily avoided.
See, Modafinil offers heightened concentration.
When deep in thought, we often forget to eat enough food and drink enough water.
Because many users aren’t hungry or thirsty after taking the smart drug.
As such, people don’t eat enough food or drink enough water when using this nootropic.
When we’re hungry or dehydrated, it’s pretty normal to get a small headache. I’ve experienced this Modafinil side effect myself.
To avoid this issue, eat your meals at the same time you would during a normal day. Then set a gallon of water next to your workplace and try to drink eight ounces each hour.
Following this protocol, I’ve never had an issue with headaches after using Modafinil.
Certain Modafinil users have reported feeling anxious or nervous around the 7-9th hour after consuming the smart drug.
While the anxiety isn’t horrible, it can cause certain individuals to stress out over the projects they’re working on.
Personally, I haven’t experienced this Modafinil side effect.
While minor, this issue seems to be fairly uncommon, too. At best, Modafinil may magnify nervousness in certain users.
This is a Modafinil side effect to lookout for, but nothing of major concern.
~ Irregular Heartbeat and/or Chest Pain
When talking about serious side effects of Modafinil usage, an irregular heartbeat is one of the worst.
If you take Modafinil and notice uneven heartbeats or minor chest pain, it’s recommended that you get immediate medical attention.
Even if symptoms persist for only 3-5+ hours.
These symptoms are not normal.
Personally, I’ve never had an issue with chest pain while using Modafinil. I haven’t heard of any other users suffering from the symptom, either.
However, it’s important to pay attention to the side effects after taking this smart drug.
While rare, you may get a slight fever after taking Modafinil.
Of the hundred or so times I’ve taken the smart drug, I recall two times I felt feverish. Usually after a 12+ hour day of long and hard work.
I took a few Ibuprofen and went to bed. The next morning the fever was gone and I felt great.
Fever is a side effect of taking Modafinil.
It’s not too common, but it does happen. Usually, a few Ibuprofen and a good night of sleep are all you need to get rid of it.
If you experience a fever with vomiting or blistering after taking Modafinil, you need to seek medical attention immediately.
Sores or white patches around your mouth and lips are a serious Modafinil side effect that I’ve never experienced.
While quite rare, you must go to the doctor if you find sores on the inside of your mouth or lips after taking the smart drug.
This side effect is likely a result of an allergic reaction and not something to mess with.
Just head to the doctor if you notice any sores.
I’m not a medical professional, so I won’t comment any further on this Modafinil side effect.
~ Bruising or Bleeding
I’ve yet to hear of anyone experiencing bruising or bleeding when taking Modafinil.
However, both are considered serious side effects of the smart drug.
Blood is never a good thing. If you start bleeding after taking any drug, it’s time to go to the hospital.
You shouldn’t be bleeding after taking Modafinil.
Hell, you shouldn’t bruise or bleed when taking any smart drug, pharmaceutical drug, or supplement.
If that happens, something is not right.
Modafinil isn’t a stimulant.
You shouldn’t feel “high” when taking this smart drug like you would when taking a high Adderall dose. That’s just not how Modafinil operates.
As such, you should never experience hallucinations when taking the nootropic.
If you start seeing things or hallucinating, then medical attention may be a good idea.
Hallucinations are not a common side effect of this nootropic, but they do occur. Personally, I’ve never had this issue when using Modafinil.
Is Modafinil Safe?
Most people have no issue with the drug outside a little sleeplessness and/or stomach issues.
Is Modafinil safe? While I’m no doctor, for the vast majority of digital nomads, hustlers, or students…
Modafinil is perfectly safe and the side effects will be minor.
Plus, there have been zero reported deaths from Modafinil.
Pay attention to the side effects of Modafinil, but don’t let these minor issues scare you away from achieving insane cognitive benefits and getting more stuff done!
