Will CBD Oil Show Up On a Drug Test?
You’ve been feeling great. Taking CBD oil before bed to improve sleep quality, manage pain, and generally feel better.
Getting “high” was never part of the plan. Hell, it doesn’t happen with CBD oil. But then you’re employer informs you that you’ll be taking a drug test – and soon!
One question comes to mind…Will CBD oil show up on a drug test?
The stuff is an over-the-counter supplement and legal, but you’re still concerned about the drug test.
You love your job. You’re good at it. Plus, you’re not using CBD oil for anything inconspicuous.
But if you fail the drug test, you could lose your job. You could lose all the opportunities you worked so hard for.
That’s not what we want.
While the supplement is great and all, it’s certainly not worth losing your career over. So…
Will CBD oil show up on a drug test?
We’re about to find out.
P.S: This should come as no surprise, but I am not a lawyer or a doctor. This article is not advice. It’s purely entertainment. Nothing more. Nothing less. Always consult with a medical professional before consuming any supplements. Oh, and read my disclaimer.
What is CBD Oil?
Before we dive too deep into CBD oil and drug tests, let’s talk about what CBD is and how it works within the body.
Basically, CBD is the shortened version of Cannabidiol, a part of industrial hemp plants.
These hemp plants are also known as cannabis sativa and contain 100+ different chemical compounds. CBD is just one of them (Source).
While many of the other components of the cannabis plant can get you “high” upon ingestion, CBD cannot.
In fact, it’s the most abundant non-psychoactive cannabinoid available. You cannot get high when ingesting CBD.
Yet, many individuals have found CBD to be beneficial for other reasons.
When using CBD oil as a medical supplement, many have found great benefits, like (Source):
- No more insomnia
- Relief from anxiety
- Depression management
- Reduced chronic Pain
…And this is just the tip of the iceberg. CBD oil offers a myriad of benefits to many suffering.
All without getting the individual high or altering the mind in any which way.
Understanding CBD Oil and Drug Tests
To understand CDB oil and drug tests, we need to look at what employers and organizations look for when testing.
The absolute vast majority of employers are testing employees for THC. They want to know if their employees are getting “high” for some reason or another.
That being said…
In certain industries, like trucking or construction, drug testing is a matter of life and death.
An employee in an altered state of mind could put people’s lives at risk.
There are different considerations for these industries than most.
However, most employers simply want to know that you’re not taking anything that would impair your ability to perform your job.
That means they’re testing for marijuana, mainly and often only, THC.
In corporate America, most drug tests allow a certain amount of THC to be in the urine before declaring a failed test.
Generally, the THC cutoff level is 50 ng/mL in the urine (Source).
More than 50 ng/ml and you will fail the test.
Can CBD Oil Have THC Inside?
CBD only can have up to 0.3% THC inside (Source).
That’s not much and generally accounts for being produced in the same facilities as medical marijuana products.
Which then brings on the question…
Can such small amounts of THC found in CBD oil cause you to fail a drug test?
The answer is NO. As long as:
- You’re taking a high-quality CBD oil product. If so, then the trace amounts of THC would never raise the levels in your urine high enough to fail a drug test.
- You’re taking normal dosages. Do no mega-dose CBD oil before a drug test. If you’re downing 2,000 mg per day, then you might get a false positive.
Now, you must know this is just speculation on my part. I’m not a doctor. Not a lawyer.
But others have said similar things.
People who know what they’re talking about when the topic of drug testing is of concern.
People like Barry Sample, Quest Diagnostics Director of Science and Technology. According to this drug testing expert (Source):
“If the product contains only CBD and has had the THC removed, then an individual being tested would not be expected to test positive for marijuana or marijuana metabolite.”
Reasons Why CBD Oil Can Cause a Failed Drug Test
You’ve probably heard stories of people who claimed to fail a drug test while consuming CBD oil and not smoking any weed.
I’d be willing to bet that person is a liar.
All the research points to CBD oil not having the ability to caused failed drug tests – as long as the stuff is from a high-quality source and taken at a normal dose.
With that being said, there are still a few reasons why someone would fail a drug test after taking CBD oil and not smoking anything:
Reason #1: Low-Quality CBD and THC Contamination
If you buy cheap CBD oil from an unverified source, you may find your CBD oil has higher trace THC than legally acceptable.
This means that taking the supplement will increase the THC levels in your urine, often passed the levels of passing a drug test.
THC contamination could also occur when buying CBD oil extracted from marijuana plants instead of hemp plants.
While this can happen, the likelihood of getting CBD oil that’s been highly contaminated with THC is very rare.
Especially if you buy a high-quality CBD oil, like Good Vibes.
Reason #2: Second-Hand Smoke
Again, this is insanely rare…
But you could fail a drug test due to second-hand marijuana smoke. Maybe your roommates or best friends like to smoke a joint on occasion.
You know you could be drug tested, so you decline to join them. But the second-hand smoke fills your apartment or home.
It gets into your lungs and/or hair.
Next thing you know, the THC levels in your urine are high enough to fail a drug test with ease.
Many individuals switch to CBD oil instead of smoking marijuana to help them fall asleep at night.
Yet their friends are still smoking, which ensures they still have THC levels in the body from time to time – even when not consuming marijuana.
CBD Oil and Athletes
While corporate America handles drug testing one way, the NCAA does things different.
The organization has a far stricter drug testing policy than most companies do.
As such, even trace amounts of THC can cause massive issues for NCAA athletes using CBD oil.
Hell, even athletes using CBD oil to manage serious medical issues have had problems with the NCAA.
If you’re an NCAA athlete, I’d recommend not using CBD oil.
The risks are too great with how the organization handles drug testing these days.
Will CBD Oil Show Up On a Drug Test?
Will CDB oil show up on a drug test?
Drug tests do not test for CBD.
Thus, CBD oil alone cannot cause a failed drug test – unless you’re an NCAA athlete.
While many are nervous about consuming the product before drug testing, the reality of the situation is there’s nothing to worry about.
If you’re concerned stop taking the stuff a few days before the test, but the research shows that a high-quality CBD oil will not cause a failed drug test alone.
Just make sure your CBD oil comes from a hemp-based source and you should be good to go.
Te lo juro.
