I read Body of a Spartan years ago before I began traveling around Latin America. The book was impressive then and it influenced my training style for years to follow, especially while traveling.

I’ve been using the training style presented by Victor for nearly three years now. It’s incredibly efficient and will get you results – if you put in the work.

What I Love About Body of a Spartan?

There’s a lot to love here. You will get in great shape following this program. My Body of a Spartan review may be a little bit biased, but I’m a big fan. Here are just a few reasons why:

Work Hard, But Smart

You won’t need to stay in the gym for 2-3 hours a day with Body of a Spartan type training. The book only recommends lifting 45 minutes to an hour 4-6 days a week.

With this style of training, you can see results with as little as three hours a week in the gym. And every one of us has three extra hours each week to ensure we get and stay in shape.

The Ideal Combination

Victor doesn’t harp on only doing free weights or machine work. He doesn’t give a damn if you want to train like a powerlifter or a bodybuilder.

Pride recommends a combination of powerlifting techniques to get stronger with additional bodybuilding lifts to add size and shape.

He believes natural trainers must do free weights like bench press, squat, and deadlift to truly look good.

For Naturals

Body of a Spartan is honest about drug use in bodybuilding. The style of lifting is designed with natural trainers in mind.

You don’t need to pump drugs to look good with this program. Most people selling programs lie about their drug use significantly. This is all too common in bodybuilding “gurus” and circles.

Victor doesn’t sugarcoat this fact. He has created a program designed to help average guys like me and you look good without steroids.

Realistic Diet Advice

Body of a Spartan doesn’t feature fancy intermittent fasting, zero carbs, and other popular diet “hacks” these days. The book details a basic diet made for natural trainers that will help burn fat and increase muscle mass.

There are no tricks. Just solid nutritional advice based on research. You’ll eat two big meals a day. I just hope you like steak and eggs.

The Best Lifts

My favorite thing about Body of a Spartan are the main lifts. Victor shows you the eight best lifts of all-time for natural trainers. If you do just these eight lifts and abdominals, you will look better than 99% of guys out there.

It’s that simple. Victor breaks down each of the lifts in great detail. From personal experience, I can tell you these main exercises work really well.

Great Variation

While Pride focuses on eight main lifts, he also allows variation. For instance, if you feel pain while back squatting, the program allows you to change to a front squat instead.

This ensures you can find the best variation of each main lift – no matter what body type or injuries you’ve had in the past.

Grab Bag / Fat Burners

Last, but not least – Victor offers a few exercises to end each workout with. These are designed to burn fat and chisel your abs.

And they work. If you get nothing else from Body of a Spartan, I recommend incorporating these exercises into your workouts.

No Book or Program is Perfect

While I believe Body of a Spartan is an ideal program for beginner to intermediate lifters, it’s not perfect. Here are a few of the downsides to the programs:

  • No Videos: No Body of a Spartan review would be honest without stating the obvious – there are no videos in this program. While most of the lifts are simple and tutorials can be found on YouTube, Pride could improve the product with video tutorials.
  • Little Supplement Advice: While supplements are not necessary to improve performance in the gym, I’ve found they do help. You won’t find any supplement recommendations or advice in this book.

Ideal For Travelers?

So can a traveler use the program from Body of a Spartan to achieve a great physique? Definitely! I did for over two years.

All you need a basic gym with some barbells and weights. It can be dirty. The gym doesn’t need to have any machines. Just some dusty barbells and plates. That’s all you need.

In all my travels, I’ve yet to find a city that didn’t have a gym. As such, you can use this program in most cities around the world.

Even if you’re on the road, there’s no excuse not to hit the gym four days a week. Gyms are everywhere these days.
