How to Say Orange in Spanish

    Two main words exist:

    • naranja
    • anaranjado

    Both work. But they’re different.

    Naranja

This means the fruit. And the color. Most people use this one.

    Example:
    La camisa es naranja.
    Meaning: The shirt is orange.

    Example:
    Quiero una naranja.
    Meaning: I want an orange.

    Anaranjado

This means “orange-ish.” Like, it looks orange.

    Example:
    El cielo está anaranjado.
    Meaning: The sky looks orange.

You can’t eat anaranjado. It’s not fruit. Just color.

    Why Two Words?

    Why Two Words?

    Simple story.

Naranja came from Arabic. Long ago.

Anaranjado? It means “like an orange.”

    So:

    • Fruit = naranja
    • Color = naranja or anaranjado

    Spanish folks say naranja more.
Latin America? Both work. But anaranjado is big for colors.

    How to use it:

    Naranja

Use it for stuff that’s orange. Clothes, animals or whatever.

    Examples:

     La flor es naranja.
    Los zapatos son naranja.
    Mi mochila es naranja.

    Big rule here:

Most color words change. You know, boy/girl stuff.
But naranja? Nope. Stay the same.

    Right:
    La camisa naranja.
    Las camisas naranja.

    Never changes.

    Anaranjado and friends

    This one changes. Watch:

    Examples:

     La fruta está anaranjada.
    El cielo anaranjado es hermoso.
    Las flores están anaranjadas.
    Los pescados son anaranjados.

    As a Fruit

    The fruit? Always naranja.

    Examples:

     Me gusta la naranja.
    Compré dos kilos de naranja.

Want more than one? Just add ‘s’: naranjas.

    In Different Countries

    Spanish changes by place.

    Spain

They say naranja. For both things.

    Mexico

    Both words work for color.

    Argentina

Naranja is big. Anaranjado for colors too.

    Colombia

    Like Mexico. Both are cool.

    Caribbean places

    Naranja wins.

    Can’t go wrong with naranja.
