Not many travelers make their way to the northern Argentine border town of Posadas, and that’s the crux of its appeal:

There’s no denying the town is sleepy, especially during the week. So if you’re the kind of traveler who seeks out fiesta-mad metropolises, then you might want to give this one a miss.
But if you’re the kind who loves to venture off the well-trodden tourist trail, then this far-flung riverside city is for you. Furthermore, a convenient location on the way to Iguazu Falls makes for an ideal stopover to break up the hellishly long 18-hour bus ride from Buenos Aires to the falls.
Yet here’s more to Posadas than just a place to lay your weary head, for the quaint pampas town is a shining example of Argentina’s charming rural life, the star of which is the archetypal gaucho.
Not all that unlike the cowboys of the wild west, the Argentine gaucho is a horseback-riding, lasoo-swinging, mate-swilling badass. This untamed farmhand has been working Argentina’s rugged rural estates since colonial days, and Posadas is just as good a place as any to meet the iconic character first hand.
Errr, you’ll certainly have to get a little bit outside of the city to meet one of these Argentinian cowboys — the center of Posadas is a bustling “city” still of around 400,000 people.

Specifically, you want to stay somewhere around Plaza 9 de Julio — within five blocks will suffice.
3 Best Neighborhoods in Posadas, Argentina
Home to just 400,000 or so inhabitants, Posadas isn’t a big place. But that doesn’t mean you should just grab a hotel anywhere. Public transport is tricky to negotiate for the non-fluent Spanish speaker, while taking Ubers everywhere quickly adds up.
The old town, A.K.A centro, lies not far from the Parana River in the eastern part of the city. Further east along the banks of the river, you’ve got the Costanera, a breezy waterfront boulevard where the locals come to walk together and wax lyrical in the late afternoons and evenings.
The southern and western areas consist of a whole host of unremarkable local barrios, which while totally authentic, don’t really have anything of interest to the average gringo. About an hour’s drive west of town, you’ve got the little village of Carlos Pellegrini, which serves as the stepping stone for the Iberia Wetlands.
#1. Centro – The Most Walkable and Convenient Neighborhood
The highest concentration of hotels can be found in centro, which is hardly surprising because most travelers would agree it’s the top spot to stay.
What’s so great about it, then?
Centro’s got two leafy plazas, pretty old colonial buildings, and a smattering of Catholic cathedrals to add a bit of character to the place. The quirky Paseo Bosetti pedestrian thoroughfare is a hangout for artisanal hawkers and nomadic hippies, while the Anibal Cambas Regional Museum is a hit for those with an interest in pre-Columbian history. The food in the area is delicious and bountiful. Try the empanadas! Plus, it’s easy enough to organize onward transport to your next destination.

Located just a few blocks from Plaza San Martin, this stylish three-star hotel has a plethora of chic cafes and tasty eateries within walking distance. Having said that, the hotel’s in-house restaurant serves up a bife de chorizo so delicious you won’t ever want to eat elsewhere.
The well-appointed rooms are modern, spotless, comfortable, and very reasonably priced.

#2. La Costanera – Waterfront views, booze, and fine dining
La Costanera is kind of like Posadas answer to the Puerto Madero neighborhood of the Ciudad Capital: glitzy wining and dining on the shores of a glistening riverfront.
Having said that, Posadas isn’t exactly Buenos Aires, so don’t come expecting a scene anywhere near as glamorous. Don’t worry, though, there are still a few chicas bonitas para conocer throughout Posadas.
Nevertheless, I had a few enjoyable evenings hanging out at the restaurants and bars of the Costanera, which is infinitely more cost-effective than its BA counterpart.
During the week there isn’t much going on, but the atmosphere becomes more lively as the weekend approaches and the locals come out to play.
One minor drawback for me is that it isn’t particularly centralized. Venues stretch all the way from Monumento Al Libertador down to Ex Estación de Trenes, which is too far to wander on foot. Ask the locals which place is most likely to be bopping that night and jump in a cab instead. The highest concentration of bars and restaurants is on Calle Flemming, which is almost always a winner.

Although technically a hostel, this funky homestay is way more comfortable and stylish than your average backpacker digs. The affable owner, Julia, ensures you’re well versed on everything there is to do around town, and the location is unbeatable just minutes from the Costanera’s best nightlife.
Dorms are available for the shoestringers and there are homely private rooms as well. It might sound a little cliche, but this one really does feel more like staying at a friend’s home than a hotel.

At around $50 a room, this centrally located property is on the upper limits of the budget scale–but it won’t exactly break the bank. And the extra money will be well spent, as you’ll enjoy a chic rooftop swimming pool, a hearty daily breakfast, and stylish modern rooms complete with cutting edge contemporary decor. Worth the splurge for budget travelers, especially for couples who can split the costs.
On the other end of the budget spectrum, the rooms in La Casona are about as cheap as you get without sharing an overcrowded dorm with hippy Chilean backpackers. Staff at the family-run hospedaje are all really nice, and the rooms are pretty decent for what you pay: clean, comfortable, and fan-cooled. You get access to a kitchen if you want to a cook and a cosy lounge if you want to chat with other travelers.
It might be a three-star hotel, but the Continental is probably more affordable than you think. That is, of course, assuming $30 per night for a stylish double room in a fully serviced hotel sounds affordable. Talk about cheap!

Quick Trip vs. Living Full-Time?
Centro is definitely the best spot to choose on a quick trip as it’s where all the best city sites and hotels are.
Not many, if any, gringos settle in Posadas — as there isn’t much going on. This is a small waterfront city in a remote area of South America.
Nevertheless, I could certainly see the appeal of purchasing a quaint Argentine hacienda to live out the rest of your life in a super simplistic way. Not exactly my cup of tea, but loads of people are dreaming of that kind of off-grid lifestyle these days.

La Costanera is pretty here. Situated along the Rio Paraná, the long boardwalk is the absolute best area of the city to enjoy a early afternoon stroll.
Here you’ll find stunning river views, tons of people talking and drinking tereré, and an outdoor gym — plus, there’s some great restaurants and bars too.

The 17th-century ruins of San Ignacio Mini are one of the biggest attractions in the region. The site, which lies about an hour north upriver from Posadas, features impressive red sand brick architecture in a mix of both Jesuit and Gurani styles.
