The verb estar is huge in Spanish. You need it for feelings. You need it for places. You need it for health.

But what about the past? Like when stuff happened once? Or at one moment? That’s when you need the preterite.

Good news! Estar looks weird in the past. But it’s super easy once you see it. After this, you can say where you were. How you felt. What was up with you back then.

This guide keeps it simple. No hard grammar. No confusing rules. Just clear steps. And examples you can use now.

Let’s make past tense estar fun!

Why Estar Changes in the Past

    in the Past

    Right now, you know these:

    • estoy
    • estás
    • está
    • estamos
    • están

But in the past? The whole thing changes. New shape! It’s irregular. Sounds scary? Nah. It’s one of the easiest weird verbs in Spanish.

Learn the base estuv. Then it’s fast. Super simple.

    The base is:

    • estuv-

Just add endings. Boom! Full chart.

    Estar Past Tense Chart

Here’s the whole thing. Learn this. Then you can say where you were anytime.

    • yo estuve
      I was
    • tú estuviste
      you were
    • él / ella / usted estuvo
he was / she was / you (polite) were
    • nosotros / nosotras estuvimos
      we were
    • vosotros / vosotras estuvisteis
      you all were (Spain only)
    • ellos / ellas / ustedes estuvieron
they were / you all were

That’s it! Six forms. No accents. No marks. Clean and easy.

    Why This Chart Is Simple

All start with estuv. Only endings change. Your brain needs one base. That’s all!

    • estuv + e
    • estuv + iste
    • estuv + o
    • estuv + imos
    • estuv + isteis
    • estuv + ieron

Know this pattern? Use it forever.

    Quick Tricks to Remember

    Try these memory tips:

    • Think “estuv” like “a stove.” Stoves are hot. Past stuff is done and hot. So stove = estuv.
    • See how yo and él are short?
      estuve
      estuvo
    • See how nosotros ends in -mos? Always!
      estuvimos
    • The they form ends in -eron. Most weird verbs do this.
      estuvieron

    Say it like music:

    • estuve
    • estuviste
    • estuvo
    • estuvimos
    • estuvisteis
    • estuvieron

Do it a few times. Sticks in your head!

What Estar Means in the Past

    Use past estar for:

    • Where someone was
    • How they felt then
    • Quick conditions
    • Short actions
    • One-time stuff
    • Things with clear start and end

    Like:

    • I was at home.
    • She was sick.
    • We were at the party.
    • They were tired.
    • He was in a meeting.
    • You were happy for a bit.

All show past stuff at one time. Perfect for preterite!

      I was at school yesterday.

    • Ella estuvo enferma el lunes.
      She was sick Monday.
    • Ustedes estuvieron muy ocupados.
      You guys were super busy.

See? Super simple. Just plug in the form. Add place or feeling.
